Les Sept Écluses d'Henri IV

Marked hike No. 72. A completely different way to discover the epic construction of the Briare Canal! This hike takes us along part of the water supply system of this canal and returns following its old route to this extraordinary monument which we now call: the Seven Locks of Rogny. Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses is classified as one of the “Cities of Burgundy – Franche-Comté” villages.

Description

Departure from the car park located Rue Hugues Cosnier (very close to the Sept Écluses).

(D/A) With your back to the car park, go right and cross the bridge which spans the canal. At the exit, immediately take the path which goes down to the foot of the locks, the canal will be on the left. Arriving at the foot of these locks, continue straight ahead, still following the canal. At the intersection with the main road, turn right and continue Rue André Henriat. Leave Rue Henri IV on the right and turn at the next intersection towards Breteau (Rue des Postillons).

(1) Leave the main road to turn right towards Le Cottard. Leave the next lane on the right in the prohibited direction. At the next intersection, turn right. Always continue straight ahead.

(2) Leave the main road, turn right, keep heading towards Brenellerie. In the left corner, hidden by vegetation, the Calvary of Saint Anne.
Continue on the road, keeping the fence on your right.

(3) At the Château de la Brenellerie (on the right), the road ends in a dirt path. Continue straight ahead, leaving the water tower on your left.
150m after the water tower, continue on the main path and leave the right and left paths.

(4) At the exit of the large curve, climb the embankment on the left to join the Rigole de Saint-Privé and follow it to the place called Le Rondeau.
At the Pont Racault crossing, keep the Rigole on the left. As well as the small stone bridge called the Pont de la Parisienne.

(5) Continue to reach the Pont du Goujat.

(6) Shortly after the pond, continue the channel on the left and notice the water blade lock. Continue the path between the Rigole and the Étang Neuf. Admire between the foliage this ideal viewpoint for a picnic.

(7) Pass the 4th bridge, which is called the Pont de la Boursicauderie, without crossing it, and stay along the Rigole. Join the road while keeping the Rigole on the left and the Étang Neuf on the right.
At the Pont des Révalleries (on the left), on the right one of the Pony Clubs; continue on the path parallel to the gutter.

(8) Arrived at the silo, possible alternative during the duration of the work from this point until the arrival:
Follow the signage Le Grand Chaloy circuit N°71 following this description:
Go left towards the silos. In front of the Briare Canal, turn right, pass under the D14 bridge. Continue on the towpath.

Javacière Lock
Continue while always keeping to the towpath. Pass the Racault Lock, the Saint-Joseph Lock then the Chante-Pinot Lock.

Arriving at the crossroads with the road, cross with caution then turn right without crossing the bridge. Pass the chicane to join the pedestrian path. Go down with the seven old locks on the right hand side. Join Rue André Henriat.

Turn left without crossing this street. After the bridge, reach the car park on the left by taking the path along the canal (D/A).

Description before work: (do not take this into account currently)
From this place, superb view point between the arrival of the Rigole de Saint-Privé which serves to supply the canal and the routes of the old and new canal.
Follow the old canal on the right. Before the bridge, take the path furthest to the left without crossing the bridge which joins the road (the path on the right is private).

(9) Travel 300m, turn right to immediately take the main path to the left.
In this wood, there are several palm groves on the right.
Stay on the path parallel to the old canal and leave the paths on the right (equestrian markings).
Cross the flat bridge and continue straight ahead. Just after the power line leave the path on the right.

(10) On the right of the path, a vestige of the canal: a micrometer terminal.
At the exit of the woods, continue straight ahead to arrive at the top of the historic monument of the Seven Locks.
Enjoy this magnificent view of the village of Rogny.
Go down the Sept Écluses site with them on the left. This place is full of history. Pass at the foot of the large chestnut tree then go up a few dozen meters to reach the road on the right.

Cross the Écluse de Rogny bridge then turn right to return to the parking lot on the left (A/D).
